RETAINING RINGS

Liberty Fastener Retaining Rings

Liberty Fastener Company is the leader in distributors of fasteners and quality threaded products. Our large supply of retaining rings is another reason why customers keep coming back to us year after year.

What are retaining rings and why are they used? Read on to find out.

What is a Retaining Ring?

A retaining ring is usually made of metal, (steel or brass but other materials and finishes are available) and it comes in two versions:

  • Spiral retaining ring

  • Snap (retaining) ring

Both types are used for locating and locking parts in place on a shaft. Retaining rings can also be used to replace nuts, cotter pins, rivets or other bulky fasteners. They are a smart and economical way to lock a part on a shaft.

How Retaining Rings Work

When assembled on a shaft or cylinder, retaining rings provide “shoulders" to help locate and hold parts together.

Retaining rings are fastened on the axel and can be removed with retaining ring pliers.
